FAQs - Hysteroscopy fertility Treatment

Hysteroscopy IVF Treatment is the procedure in which inspection of the uterine cavity is done with the help of Hysteroscopy, with access through the cervix, to know the intrauterine pathology. Hysteroscopy allows direct visualization of the uterocervical canal and endometrial assessment. Indications for Hysteroscopy would be patients with a history of recurrent IVF failures, any abnormality seen on HSG or TVS, any history of previous instrumental intervention or uterine scarring, and even a history of recurrent miscarriages. The hysteroscopy test is a very vital investigational tool for fertility. Hysteroscopic correction of uterine anomalies and lesions is the best way to maintain normal uterine anatomy and function, thereby restoring fertility.

  • Endometrial Abnormalities: It includes polypoid endometrium, pale /edematous endometrium, atrophic endometrium, endometritis. Any atypical appearance on TVS should be followed up with a Hysteroscopy to rule out such abnormalities.
  • Endometritis: Hysteroscopic diagnosis of endometritis is highly specific. Appropriate hormonal or antimicrobial treatment following the hysteroscopic diagnosis of endometritis has been shown to improve clinical pregnancy rates following natural or assisted conception.
  • Endometrial Polyps: It represents the most common intracavitary findings in fertile patients. Polyp removal appeared to improve fertility and increase pregnancy rates in previously fertile women with no other reason to explain their fertility.
  • Intrauterine Adhesions: Asherman’s Syndrome, besides causing recurrent pregnancy loss & fertility, can also cause amenorrhea if severe. Hysteroscopy is the gold standard of management because it can offer treatment along with the diagnosis.

Hysteroscopy, therefore, should be an integral part of the pretreatment evaluation of infertile women with or without a history of previous treatment failures to avoid unnecessary and expensive repeated treatments.

Generally, there are two types of Hysteroscopy: Diagnostic Hysteroscopy and Operative Hysteroscopy.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy is majorly used to identify several problems of the uterus. Physicians perform this procedure to confirm the results of other tests of the cervix like HSG & Hysterosalpingography.

On the other side, Operative Hysteroscopy is a surgical treatment and done to fix abnormal uterus conditions.

Hysteroscopy is usually done for evaluation purposes. Put simply, it alone cannot cure any health condition. Your doctor may ask you to undergo a Hysteroscopy procedure if you-:

  • Experiencing uterine bleeding
  • Have excessive bleeding right after menopause
  • Want to identify the real cause of your repeated miscarriages
  • Need to find and eliminate displaced IUDs
  • Less pain, shorter time in hospital
  • Shorter recovery period compared to open surgery
  • Fewer medications are needed after surgery
  • Avoidance of hysterectomy
If regional or general anesthesia is used, you will need to remain at the hospital until your doctor determines that you are stable enough to go home. You may feel shoulder pain if gas is used. Also, you may feel a little faint after the procedure, but this should go away quickly. But, if you experience fever, unbearable abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, be sure to consult your doctor. If you are also experiencing fertility or frequent miscarriages, visit Reviva Fertility Clinic in Chandigarh for a Hysteroscopy.
