Ovulation induction uses a variety of hormone-based medications to regulate a woman’s reproductive hormones & increases the chances of ovulation.
Some of the common medications used are:-
1) Clomiphene citrate: It stimulates ovulation in women who have normal pituitary gland hormones in the brain, but in whom the typical monthly changes in these hormones are not occurring. Consequently, this medication is commonly known by its brand name, CLOMIAL.
2) Aromatase inhibitors: Similarly to clomiphene citrate, this type of medication is highly effective in patients with PCOS. Most patients recognize it as LETROZOLE or by its brand name, FEMARA.
3) Gonadotrophins: The treatment consists of two injectable hormones, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which encourage egg development. These hormones are normally produced by the pituitary gland. However, because of how powerfully gonadotrophins stimulate egg development, they require more frequent monitoring than clomiphene citrate and LETROZOLE. Additionally, risks associated with this treatment include multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), in which the ovaries become overstimulated and swollen.
• Disorders that can directly inhibit normal ovulation such as PCOS.
• A woman’s hormone levels specifically the pressure of FSH, AMH & LH.
• Disorders that can indirectly affect ovulation, such as thyroid disorder, eating disorder & obesity.
• The amount of exercise a woman does.
For women who continue to experience abnormal ovulation after ovulation induction treatment. Physicians can also try superovulation. Superovulation uses the human chronic gonadotrophins to induce the release of potential mature eggs in the follicle.
Ovulation induction can sometimes cause OHSS. It ranges from mild to severe.
They can include:
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Loss of breath
• Hot flushes
• Weight gain
• Tenderness in the pelvic region
• Blurry vision
It is usually one of the first treatments used for infertility because it is non-invasive and relatively low in cost. Moreover, compared with other fertility treatments, such as IVF, it remains more affordable when considering the costs of tests, medications, minor procedures, and lab work.
For more severe cases of anovulation or other forms of infertility, ovulation induction can also be an effective treatment. For instance, advanced procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), and other holistic treatments may be considered.
